“Having work- and studying experience in both the Netherlands and Tanzania, my comprehension of the two cultures helped form a bridge between the company and the farmers in this project.”

Kareem Mwinyi is a Master International Communication Student at Hanze University. Through the East Africa Hub, he was involved in creating a strategy to transfer knowledge regarding best potato farming practices to Tanzian farmers. Coming from Tanzania himself, he deepend the insights of his international project group.

“For the second semester of the Master International Communication program, we could pick one of three project topics. When I saw that there was an option to work on a project set in Tanzania, I knew what I would choose. My brother and I are involved with farming through agribusiness back in Tanzania. Therefore, I was very curious about what would come out of the project, and if some of the insights were useful for us personally as well.”

“The strategy that we created focussed on how HZPC, a Dutch potato company, could inform and teach Tanzanian farmers to optimize their potato yield. If done right, potatoes can grow really well in the country and can form a new tool to develop food security. This project challenged us to do things from a more strongly human-centered approach. Take your time to establish trust and really make people believe in what they are growing. Understand that they are doing this for the well-being of the community. Our client was happy with the results, so I am curious about what ultimately comes out of it!”

“I liked sharing knowledge about where I come from with my international teammates. I wanted to create a space where people feel free to ask me questions and develop their curiosity.”
