The Agro-Chemical and Food Company manufactures industrial spirit from the fermentation of molasses, and in the process discharges 1.2 million litters of liquid effluent into the Nyando River per day. However, the effluent does not meet discharge standards thus, there has been concern that the effluent is polluting water quality in the Nyando River, which puts downstream water users at risk.
Hanze students from Life, Science and Technology performed tests with the discharge water and tried to find a way the discharge can be released, without polluting the water in the river.
